OUR HISTORY

“Shortwood Practising School celebrates 120 years of Education” Shortwood Practising School was established on January 17th 1887. In 2007 the school will be120 years old.

Shortwood Practising School has an interesting history dating back to the nineteenth century. The school was started on a property owned by Sir Henry Morgan. It was originally created to provide educational facilitiesfor the children of the people who worked on his estate. The original building was a stable but this was remodeled and used as a school building.

Although the original plan was for the school to train the children of the worker’s of Sir Henry Morgan, this was modified to facilitate the training of student teachers who enrolled at the college for a Teacher-training course. This has been so since 1887. The school has been providing opportunities for students in training to do course.teaching practice, as well as observe demonstrations by experienced teachers both from the school and the College.

The enrolment of the school spans Infant, Primary and Post-primary levels. This greatly facilitates the training of teachers for all these ages. As a result there is constant dialogue between the college’s staff and the staffat the school, especially in areas of curriculum development etc.

Although the name ‘Practising’ School implies a school where student teachers practice the art of teaching, one should not believe that this school enjoys any special privileges because of it’s name but it must cope with all the requirements of the ordinary All- age school while at the same time fulfilling its role as a practicing school. The philosophy of the school is to provide a broad education for the pupils and allow for opportunities of creativity and experimentation on the part of both the pupils and teachers.

Members of staff constantly upgrade their academic and professional education so they can contribute adequately in their respective fields. It is hoped that the students will continue to be motivated to greaterachievements, parents to more co-operation and the community to a greater interest in education.

Congratulations Shortwood Practising School on 120 years of Education.
