120th. Anniversary Celebration
NEW YORK, NY - Actions speak louder than words and that exactly happened Saturday, 19th May, 2007 when despite thecontinuous inclement weather, more than 300 persons braved it and attended the Shortwood Practicing School Past Students’ 120th Anniversary celebration with a formal dinner and dance at the Holiday Inn JFK Airport.
The Master of Ceremony, Alumnus Crawford West introduced guests who were; President and CEO of Air Jamaica, Mr. Michael J. Conway who was also the Guest Speaker for the evening; Ambassador Consul-General Dr. Basil K. Bryan; Glen-dean Belvett the current Head girl; Mrs. Evelyn Gyles immediate past principal; Mrs. Una Dillon, current principal; Mrs. Cynthia Stafford. Alumnus Reverend Christopher Williams gave the invocation.
Representing the Government of Jamaica, the Jamaican community in the Tri-State area and in the other 38 States for which he is responsible, Ambassador Consul-General Dr. Basil Keith Bryan brought greetings. He took a quote from the Book of Jeremiah when he said, “The Prophet Jeremiah said, when you are in a strange land build that land but never forget from whence you came.”
Alumnus Wellesley Robertson reminisced about his days at Shortwood, calling names of some of his schoolmates and of their pranks together. He presented the Secretary of the Past Students’ Association in New York, Mrs. Ann Watson-Mair with flowers.
Alumna Marvella Murray introduced the keynote speaker, Michael J. Conway. Referring to his position as President and CEO for Air Jamaica as a sacred trust, Conway said that even though his father had little education he knew the value and importance of education so both parents always prodded him to get as much education as was possible.
The members of the New York Chapter received heartfelt congratulations for their consistent involvement in Shortwood Practicing School.

Annual Picnic 2007
The Toronto Annual Picnic was a great success.
Despite several challenges, this year’s picnic was very successful. The picnic started around noon and ended close to 10.00pm. The day began with beautiful sunshine although there was a threat of rain in the forecast. Fortunately the rain never materialized. It became very windy in the afternoon, which turned out to be the day’s biggest challenge.
There was a very good attendance of past students representing the decades of 1950’s 1960’s, 1970’s, & 1980’s. There was a constant procession of both past students, family and friends throughout the day as people came and went. There was plenty of food, good music, lots to reminiscence about the good old days, and a good time was had by all. Looking forward to seeing everyone in Jamaica for the“ Homecoming” 2008 next year!
